Every kitchen is unique and the type of kitchen cooking supplies and utensils depends on the taste of the cook. A kitchen is arranged according to the comforts and needs of the cook and only the cook will decide what kind of utensils he will need to do his work efficiently. Every item in the kitchen has its own utility and purpose. Some are frequently used for every item being cooked and some are used rarely for specific recipes alone.
In order to cook efficiently in the kitchen, one needs some basic essential cooking equipments like stove, oven, mixer grinder, refrigerator, and even a microwave if needed. The kind of utensil chosen to cook a meal depends on the food being cooked. The size of the vessel is chosen according to the quantity of food being cooked. At present times we come across a huge collection of vessels of all kinds of interesting and innovative shapes and sizes. We can get a really wide choice of variety.
There is a need for different kinds of vessels right from measuring and storing till the meal gets served on the table. This includes vessels used for mixing, cutting, cooking, storing. If one prefers cooking in microwave, that too needs a different set of vessels for each item.
When one starts cooking, they may first need utensils for measuring the ingredients. Separate measuring utensil is needed for measuring liquids too. This can be made of plain glass, plastic or even stainless steel. It should have markings indicating different quantities.
Next most used item in kitchen would be spoons. These come in sets and sometimes are held together by a ring, hung on a rack, or even nested together. Usually these are made of metal, plastic or stainless steel and the sizes are a tablespoon, teaspoon, l/2 teaspoon, and l/4 teaspoon.
Pots and pans come in many different shapes, each with specific features that make it ideal for certain techniques and types of recipes. The different varieties of pots and pans available are stock pot, skillet, saucepan, double boiler, saucier, chef’s pan, grill pan, dutch pan, omelette pan, frying pan etc. Next important part of the kitchen are knives.
Vegetables and other items used for cooking have different textures and the same knife cannot be used for all. The basic types of knives a kitchen should have are a paring knife, a French knife, a bread knife, a roast slices and also a grapefruit or citrus knife for sectioning citrus fruit.
